South Africa has a rich and diverse history and one of my favourite parts is the style that emerged from the vibrant 1950s Sophiatown*. The town was a melting pot of culture, music and arts. Every weekend the bustling streets were lined with men and women dressed to kill to attend live music concerts, beauty pageants or the theater.
The Design Team, which is made up of Amanda Haupt and Lise Butler, have teamed up with The Bailey's African History Archives to create the BAHA collection which is inspired by the South African icons which were instrumental in Sophiatown. Top Billing magazine describes this collection as rediscovering the magic of the era.
For Lise Butler, "the recipe for successful design is strong iconography, simple repeats and good solid use of colour. Having a story linked to the fabric makes it so much more precious."
I simply love this collection. - Mart

*Unfortunately in 1955, 2 000 policemen, armed with guns, rifles, knobkerries forcefully moved the families of Sophiatown to Soweto. Over the next eight years Sophiatown was flattened to give way for a suburb for whites and the area was renamed Triomf - Afrikaans for Triumph by the apartheid government. The name Sophiatown was officially restored in 2006.
