About Springs

I have realised that I made mention about my former hometown, Springs a few times so here is some tidbits about the town.

When googling Springs, one of the top searches was for Clarendon Caravans and I thought well that sums up the town quite well, but on further web searching this is what I discovered:

"Springs is an industrial town in northeastern South Africa, in the Gauteng Province. Springs is located in the Witwatersrand, goldmining region, near Johannesburg. The town was formed in 1904. Springs is currently one of the industrial centers of the Witwatersrand. Mining has been replaced by manufacturing and engineering industries of economic importance; products of Kelloggs factory in South Africa is situated in Springs. Springs is also home to Impala Platinum's precious and base metal refineries as well as PFG Building Glass, the only producer of float glass on the continent. Zincor, the only zinc producer in Africa, is also located here; its refinery produces all South Africa's requirement of this metal."

• Nadine Gordimer, the first South African Nobel Laureate in Literature(1991) and recipient of the 1974 Booker Prize
• Fiona Coyne , a well-known theatre actress,playwright, writer, and television presenter (The Weakest Link, South Africa)
• Brandon Auret, a well-known stage, television (Isidingo), and film (Hansie) actor, singer and songwriter
• Penny Heyns, double Olympic gold medallist in swimming (1996), holder of 14 swimming world records, and the only woman in history to complete the Olympic double of winning both the 100 and 200 metre breaststroke
